We welcome Oscar Chan Yik Long as our artist-in-residence throughout February 2017.
"Devils and demons do not exist only in myth. They live in people’s minds. The strongest devil that lives in my mind is fear." Over the last two years, Oscar has been reconciling with his demons through his art practice. During his time at Things that can happen, through re-examining some elements in his previous works, Oscar pushes himself out of his comfort zone, delving deeper into the relationship between the external world and the darkness within all of us, and the continuous construction of one in the other. Oscar moves into the galleries of the space, adjusting his daily habits and engages with the particular energies, shadows and voices that the site compels. As an obsessive observer of his internal state, like a traveler becomes aware of home, the alien environment triggers new demons to surface. As culmination of the project, an exhibition will be presented in April 2017.
Oscar Chan Yik Long is an artist based in Hong Kong. His practice focuses on personal experiences through different media including installation, ceramics, and illustration, most of which are site-specific.
We sincerely thank Yana and Stephen Peel for generously supporting Oscar Chan Yik Long's residency and exhibition at Things that can happen. We are additionally grateful for support from the Young Collectors Collective (YCC) for the exhibition.
